Calera is a city in both Shelby and Chilton Counties in central Alabama, south of Birmingham, with a population of 11,620 people. Columbiana is the County Seat of Shelby County, and Clanton is the County Seat of Chilton County. Jon Graham is the mayor of Calera, and his office is located in City Hall, which is on Highway 31.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is located in Columbiana, and the sheriff is John Samaniego. Divisions within the sheriff’s office include patrol, criminal investigations, corrections, administration, narcotics, and specialty units.

The Corrections Division is headed by Captain Jay Fondren and is located on the premises with the sheriff’s office. This facility has 500 beds and employs 65 correction officers. Inmates are allowed one visit per week, via video visits. Appointments for visits must be made via the website http://jailvisitor.com/. Visitation appointments are available for Tuesday – Thursday, from 7:20 pm to 9:35 pm, Saturday from 8:00 am to 11:25 am, and Sunday from 8:00 am to 9:35 pm. All visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office is the other police department in the area, and the office is run by Sheriff John Shearon. He’s been serving as the elected sheriff since 2014. The Sheriff’s Office is located in Clanton, and department divisions include investigations, patrol, courthouse security, and corrections.

The Chilton County Jail houses generally houses about 200 inmates daily. The commander of the jail is Captain Trae Barfield, and there are 25 corrections officers at the jail. Inmates are allowed to have one 30-minute visit each week. Appointments for visitation can be made by calling 205-755-1053 between 3pm and 7pm the day before the visit. Visitation is from 1pm to 3pm Monday-Friday.
