The latter is the largest city in the area. Based on the 2010 census, 83,593 people reside in this county. Its total area measures 654 square miles. The adjacent counties are Etowah County in the north, Calhoun County in the east, Talladega County in the southeast, Shelby County in the southwest, Jefferson County in the west, and Blount County in the northwest.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of life and property in the community. The department provides law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas in the county and assists the municipalities when needed. The SCCSO is comprised of several divisions including Patrol, Criminal Investigation, Narcotics, Civil, Courthouse Security, and 911 Emergency Dispatch. It employs 72 sworn law enforcement deputies and operates 24/7. Sheriff Billy J. Murray is the head of the SCCSO and serves as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in the county. Chief Deputy John McWaters is the Sheriff’s second-in-command. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the department.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for operating two county jails, one in each county seat. These two facilities house pre-sentenced and sentenced individuals while the Ashville facility also houses juveniles. Jail Administrator Paul Monk oversees the day-to-day operations of the two facilities.
