County History:
Originally, this area was made up of indigenous people, the Choctaw and Creek American Indians. Prior to the Louisiana Purchase, when they began a relationship with the United States, the Indians traded with French, Scots and Brits from colonies on the Atlantic coastline. The county seat is Grove Hill and Clarke county was named for Governor John Clarke from Georgia.

In the early 1800s, the Choctaw traded land to the US for European American settlements. Clarke county was established in 1812 by the Mississippi Territory and was the home for Fort Sinquefield. The county was dry until November 3, 2009 when alcohol sales were legalized.
