County History:   

Macon county has its seat in Tuskegee and is named in honor of Senator Nathaniel Macon from North Carolina. Located in the Black Belt, the county has had a majority African American population since before the Civil War.  It’s known for having the third largest number of voters in the state in 2004 for John Kerry in the presidential election. The county was established in 1832 when our country took land from the Creek Indians under the Indian Removal Act of 1830.  At that time, the county was largely cotton plantations.  It is also home to Tuskegee University; whose first president was Dr. Booker T. Washington.  The county has offered pari-mutuel gambling since 1983.
