Named for our fifth President, James Monroe, outside of two cities, Monroe is a dry county.  Because it is the birthplace of Truman Capote and Harper Lee and the tremendous success of her book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Alabama government dubbed Monroe county as the Literacy Capital of Alabama.  Like so many other Alabama counties, Monroe also has a history with Creek Indians as well as racial challenges.
