County History:

Clayton is one of two county seats (the second is Eufaula) for Barbour County since 1834, and the county is named in honor of a former Virginia Governor, James Barbour.  The county was established in December 1832 and was once inhabited by the Creek Indians, who were later pushed west of the Mississippi.  The large cotton plantations, who were highly dependent on slave labor created an African American majority in the county; however, in the 21st century, whites have a slight majority with 54 percent.  There is a very lively politic environment in the county.
