With its county seat in Andalusia, Covington county was established in December 1821, but it wasn’t always Covington. For about two months in 1886, the name changed to and from Jones county. Covington was named for Brigadier General Leonard Covington who died in the War of 1812. Like other counties in Alabama, Covington has suffered through disastrous hurricane activity.
