The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Mobile County Metro Jail. This facility holds an average of 1,500 inmates per day. It also features a 325-bed minimum security barracks that houses prisoners who are put to work in order to earn their keep.

According to the 2010 census, there are 412,992 people living in this area, making it the second most populated county in the state. The total area of the county is 1,644 square miles. The adjacent counties are Washington County (north), Baldwin County (east), Jackson County in Mississippi (southwest), George County in Mississippi (west), and Greene County in Mississippi (northwest).
