Cherokee county was born in January 1836 and was named for the American Indians who resided there. Cherokee Chief Pathkiller, lived in what is now the county seat in Centre. It wasn’t until 2011 that Centre, which is centrally located, began to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages. Until that time, it was a dry city.

Visitation for inmates are at the following times:
Unit 1 – Sunday from 1:00PM – 3:00PM
Unit 2 – Saturday from 1:00PM – 3:00PM
Unit 3 – Sunday from 8:00AM – 10:00AM
Unit 4 – Saturday from 7:30 – 9:30 AM
Unit 5 – Saturday from 9:30AM – 11:00AM
Unit 6 – (Female Inmates) Saturday from 3:00PM – 5:00PM
Trustee Visitation – Sunday from 3:00PM – 5:00PM
Holding/Medical Infirmary inmates – Saturday from 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM.
Each inmate will receive one, twenty minute visit a week unless there is a security issue. All visitors must provide a valid ID upon request.
Sending mail to Inmates
Inmates receive their mail daily. All incoming and outgoing mail is inspected for contraband. Letters, cards, post cards with up to 5 pictures maximum. Pictures can be no larger than 5×7. Incoming and outgoing mail is to have no profanity, stickers, or graffti on the outside of the envelope. Any correspondence between inmates in this facility or another Correctional Facility is PROHIBITED.
Sending funds to inmates
The Cherokee County Detention Center accepts funds for inmate commissary two different ways. One, by adding funds to the Trinity Cashier machine in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office which accepts CASH ONLY. The other is WWW.SMARTDEPOSIT.COM or by phone at 1-866-394-0490 You will only need the inmates full name and location to set up an account to add funds.

The Cherokee County Detention Center accepts the following types of bail bonds:
- Property – All property bonds require 2 signatures. Each signature must have property equal to the amount of the bond each, and cannot have mortgaged property.
- Cash Bond – Must be paid in full at the Cherokee County Circuit Clerk’s Office.
- Bonding Company – Bonding Companies must be licensed in Cherokee County to make bonds. Most companies charge 10% of the bond amount to make the bail for inmates.
