County History:

Autauga county, with its seat in Prattville (since 1868) was originally established in November 1818.  That was one year before Alabama became a state.  Mostly in a village called Atagi, which means pure water, the Autauga Indian tribes lived there along the banks of Pearl Water Creek.  The Autauga Indians were part of the Alibamu tribe.  In 1833, Daniel Pratt founded Prattville and his cotton gin factory was the largest gin in the world.  Mr. Pratt was also the owner of the first major industry in the state.  The first fighting unit for the Confederacy was organized with Mr. Pratt’s financial backing.  No Civil War fighting ever made it to Autauga county.

One of Mr. Pratt’s slaves, Charles Atwood bought a home in the center of Prattville directly after emancipation and became one of the founding investors with Mr. Pratt in the South and North Railroad.  In the early 1860s this was a very impressive accomplishment.
