 County History:

Marengo county, established in 1818 inherited its name from the Battle of Marengo in Italy, which is where Napoleon Bonaparte won against the Austrians in 1800.  Linden is the county seat, which was originally the Town of Marengo.  In 1860, the population was 78 percent African American, enslaved at over 750 cotton plantations.  An estimated five million African Americans moved west during the Great Migration, draining the southern states populations.  In Marengo, old cotton fields were eventually converted to feeding pastures, timber woodlands, catfish farms.  It wasn’t until the 1960s that the work force in Marengo began working in chemical plants, lumber and paper mills.
