400 West 8th Street

Anniston, AL  36201

County History:

There is usually an interesting story behind county names and this county is no exception.  Originally called Benton county when it was established in 1832, the name was in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, who was a US Senator.  Mr. Benton was a slave owner along with is pal, John C. Calhoun, another US Senator.  Both gentlemen worked to expand slavery until Mr. Benton changed his mind and arrived at the decision that slavery was wrong and preserving the union was a great cause.  Alabama’s citizen who supported slavery, disagreed and they changed the name of the county to Calhoun.  In 1900, the county seat was moved to Anniston.
