 County History:   

No, this isn’t the Madison county in The Bridges of Madison County, that was in Iowa.  But, this Madison county, named in honor of President James Madison, who was the first president to visit the state of Alabama.  The county was established in 1808 and is considered the birthplace of Alabama.  The area was once known for its cotton production and textile mills until a group of rocket scientists arrived in the county in 1950.  They built the rocket that sent the first two Americans into space and the area boomed as thousands of jobs were open in the area.  Population jumps from about 73,000 to more than 350,000.
