Established in 1820 and named for General Andrew Pickens from South Carolina, Carrollton is the county seat for Pickens county.  Although population had been declining, in 2014 it became the fastest growing county in the state, thanks to the installation of the Federal Correctional Institution, which is a women’s prison in Aliceville, Alabama.
