Dallas County Jail

988 Selfield Road

Selma, AL  36703

County History:

With its county seat in Selma, Dallas county got its name from the US Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander J. Dallas, who served from 1814 through 1816.  The area has been known as the Black Belt because of its large cotton plantations, formerly worked by slaves who continued to work as sharecroppers and tenant farmers after emancipation.  Still basically a rural area, the population peaked in 1960 because younger residents began leaving the area to find work.

Of course, you will likely remember Martin Luther King, Jr.’s involvement in the campaign to earn the blacks voting rights during the 1965 march, where 25,000 people came into Montgomery on March 31.  President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and millions of African-Americans participated in our political system.
