County History:   

Jefferson county declared bankruptcy in 2011 after falling $4.2 billion in debt.  The expenses were related to a massive sewer project and investigators identified corruption among several officials.  So, Birmingham, Jefferson county’s seat is known for two things, the largest Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy in the US (until 2013 when another state took over) and it is the largest populated county in the state.  Named for President Thomas Jefferson, the county was established in 1819.  The area has a history of racial tensions.

The visitation period for the Birmingham Jail is from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on the following schedule (based on the first initial of the inmate’s last name)

 The visitation period for the Bessemer Jail is as follows:

A-G Saturday 8:00 am to 11:00 pm

H-Q Saturday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

R-Z Sunday 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Sending mail to Inmates:  

Letters to inmates enclosed in an envelope will not be accepted.  All written incoming inmate mail, with the exception of legal mail, must be on a metered postcard and addressed to the inmate using their full name, date of birth, and jail number.

Sending funds to inmates:  

  • Money Orders should be payable to the inmate, placed in an envelope and dropped in the box at the facility.  On the envelope, be sure to record:  
  • Inmate name
  • Name of the sender
  • Amount of the money order
  • Inmate’s JCID number (if known)
  • Money will be posted to the inmate’s account the next business day

  • There is a convenience fee for cash deposits of $3 and the fee will be deducted from the deposit amount
  • The person making the deposit must know the Inmate’s Jacket Number and their Full and Correct Name
  • A receipt will be issued from the kiosk to the person depositing the funds.  Deposits can be made at either kiosk location for any inmate located in the Birmingham & Bessemer facilities
  • Deposits made by the use of the kiosk are immediately credited to the inmate’s account
